چکیده

We study the effect of the cosmological constant on the statistical properties of gravitational lenses in flat cosmologies (Ω0 + λ0 = 1). It is shown that some of the lens observables are strongly affected by the cosmological constant, especially in a low–density universe, and its existence might be inferred by a statistical study of the lenses. In particular, the optical depth of the lens distribution may be used best for this purpose without depending much on the lens model. We calculate the optical depth (probabilty of a beam encountering with a lens event) for a source in a new picture of galaxy evolution based on number evolution in addition to pure luminosity evolution. It seems that present day galaxies result from the merging of a large number of building blocks. We have tried to put limit on the cosmological E–mail : [email protected] E–mail : [email protected] E–mail : [email protected] E–mail : [email protected]

Gravitational Lensing Limits on Early-type Galaxies

Gravitational lenses are a unique new constraint on the structure of galaxies. We review the evidence that most lenses are early-type galaxies, the optical properties of the lens galaxies, the evidence against constant M/L models, recent work on the axis ratios of the mass distribution , and the role stellar dynamics plays in gravitational lensing.

0 The Fundamental Plane of Gravitational Lens Galaxies and The Evolution of Early - Type Galaxies in Low Density Environments

Most gravitational lenses are early-type galaxies in relatively low density environments – a " field " rather than a " cluster " population. Their average properties are the mass-averaged properties of all early-type galaxies. We show that field early-type galaxies with 0 < z < 1, as represented by the lens galaxies, lie on the same fundamental plane as those in rich clusters at similar redshif...

Effect Of Galaxy Evolution On The Statistical Properties Of Gravitational Lenses

In this paper we study how the statistical properties of gravitational lenses are modified when galaxy evolution is taken into account. We consider models of the universe in which the cosmological term Λ decreases with time or remains constant, both with and without the evolution of galaxies. We show that the probability of a beam encountering a lens event (lens optical depth) for a source at z...

The redshift distribution of gravitational lenses revisited: Constraints on galaxy mass evolution

The redshifts of lens galaxies in known gravitational lens systems probe the volume distribution of lensing mass. Following earlier work by Kochanek, we re-derive the lens redshift probability distribution, allowing for mass and number density evolution of the lensing galaxies, and apply this test to a much enlarged sample of lens systems. From a literature survey of all known lenses, we have s...

Constraints on the Baryonic Compression and Implications for the Fraction of Dark Halo Lenses

We predict the fraction of dark halo lenses, that is, the fraction of lens systems produced by the gravitational potential of dark halos, on the basis of a simple parametric model of baryonic compression. The fraction of dark halo lenses primarily contains information on the effect of baryonic compression and the density profile of dark halos, and is expected to be insensitive to cosmological p...
